Estonia made it!

Slovenia was too strong for Serbia, and the serbians lost 1-0 in Ljubljana. In Tallinn, estonian supporters celebrated (even with green and white scarves of Slovenia) their first appearance in a European Championship play-off.

Just 3 years ago, Estonia hit historical lows in football, falling to an embarrassing 137th place in the FIFA Ranking. Wins against Serbia, Slovenia and Northern Ireland allowed them to secure the 2nd place in Group C, and a play-off spot.

Now they'll eventually face France or Portugal (that'd be nice), and actually they don't have much chances of qualifying for the final stage of the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, but it's pretty obvious this was their best campaign ever, and surely one of the major upsets in european football.

I always like when minnows enjoy some success. That's what still makes football so interesting. It sounds like a cliche, but it's true: 11 players against 11 players, anything can happen.

I do have a Estonia Shirt in my collection.

  1. I agree man, it's great when underdogs upset the apple-cart. Hope they beat the big boys in the play-offs too! Though sadly not much chance of it...
